Sandalwood is an evergreen tree that grows as a parasite – it embeds its roots into other trees and grows up to 9 meters tall. It has a reddish-gray trunk and numerous thin branches, leathery leaves, and pinkish-purple flowers. It takes up to 60 or even 80 years for the tree to fully mature, and that's when it's best for oil production. Sandalwood is especially revered in Hinduism, where it is considered a sacred tree and is used in celebratory events such as births and weddings. It was known in India, Egypt, Greece, and Rome 4000 years ago. Many temples were built from sandalwood. Now, it is only used for oil distillation, and when branches are cut, the tree is left for 30 years to recover.

Sandalwood essential oil is almost clear or orange-brown in color and has a rich, woody, sweet scent. It acts as a diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and antispasmodic. It promotes scar healing, has astringent properties, and tightens the skin. It helps with expectoration and improves memory. In cosmetics, it nourishes dry and cracked skin, and is also suitable for acne-prone skin and eczema. In aromatherapy, it brings good mood and is also used as an aphrodisiac. The older the tree when it was prepared for distillation, the richer the scent of the oil will be, which improves with aging if stored correctly.

Oils with which it can be mixed: cloves, lavender, geranium, patchouli, jasmine, benzoin, bergamot, clary sage, coriander, cypress, fennel, frankincense, myrrh, palmarosa, black pepper, peppermint.

Usage: If you want to scent a room, drop a few drops into the water in a diffuser. Similarly, you can add a few drops to a scented bath for a nicer smell or sprinkle it on dried flowers, wood, etc., and the oil will slowly evaporate into the room, creating a pleasant scent.
