Clary sage is a biennial or perennial herb of lower growth, reaching up to one meter, and has large, hairy leaves and tiny blue-violet flowers that grow on an upright stem. The English word Clary Sage comes from the Latin term for purity, probably because this herb was used to clear mucus from the eyes. In the sixteenth century, it was also used in England instead of hops for brewing beer.

Clary sage essential oil is light, golden yellow in color and has an earthy, fruity-floral scent reminiscent of nuts and herbs. Clary sage essential oil blends well with: bergamot, Himalayan cedarwood, chamomile, geranium, jasmine, lavender, neroli, orange, sandalwood, rosewood, and ylang ylang.
